Grand Ayatollah Seyed Muhammad Kazim Tabatabaee Yazdi

Grand Ayatollah Seyed Muhammad Kazim Tabatabaee Yazdi (d. 1920 AD), was one of the greatest shi’a “Ulama and Maraji”, and the prime marja (religious leader) or spiritual reference, for Shi’a Muslims of his time and was a student of Mirza Hasan Shirazi.

His most famous work is “Al-Urwa Al-Wuthqa”.

After the death of Mullah Muhammad Kazim Khurasani, he attained the position of Marjaiyat (authority).

HIS SOCIAL ROLE

During the first world war, the Ottoman government sided with Germany against the armies of Britain and France. As the war spread to Iraq, which at the time formed part of the Ottoman Empire and the situation became critical, he declared holy war (Jihad) against the British and issued a number of fatwas ordering his followers to resist the foreign imperialists. The eminent Mujtahids and scores of religious students led the army in defense of their Islamic homeland.

Consequently, at the time of the occupation of Iraq by the British and Libya by the Italians, and the Russian and British invasion of Iran, it was the fatwa of this great clergyman, which encouraged the people to free their lands from foreign occupation.
